In 1992 Shane Coursen started as Associate Software Engineer for Symantec Corporation. Since 1995 he has held senior research positions with several major antivirus vendors, including Kaspersky Lab, Fortinet Inc., Trend MICRO, McAfee & Dr Solomon's Software. Throughout that time Coursen has spent hundreds of hands-on hours looking at all types of malware at the lowest possible levels, disassembling it and documenting how it works.
From 1994 to 2002 Coursen took part in a cooperative project named The WildList. The 'job' was to collect reports and samples from a global list of contributing reporters; respected researchers working for nearly ever reputable antivirus software vendor on the planet. Collectively, the reports told us where computer viruses were being discovered and found propagating, and which of those had become prevalent.. Careful analysis of the samples led to the creation of an industry standard virus library, one that is today used in many antivirus product certifications.
Pick Shane’s Brain Weblog serves as an extension of the knowledge that Coursen has picked up along the way -- his observations of contemporary computer security events and findings that relate to the world of computer security.
